TRAINING - What we have done...  

In 2005 Save the Children funded a workshop for the Collaborative to train young people in the research skill of facilitating focus groups with young people. Ten young people took part and two of them went on to contribute to the work of the Collaborative, in research and training endeavours.

In 2006 a training day was arranged for the Canterbury Youth Workers Collective on Youth Development and Mental health for Young people, and a series of workshops on Youth Development has been undertaken in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth Development.

A workshop was run for nurses, counselors and youth workers working in schools in West Auckland at the beginning of 2006. A Parent education evening was held in October 2006 and plans for more are underway.

Whole day Workshop on Solution Focused Therapy by Deborah Christie from the UK in July 2006.

Workshops for public health nurses in communication skills with adolescents and the HEADSS asessment, plus brief interventions in mental health.

Workshop for Staff at the Mornington PHO in Dunedin, Communication skills and working with young people.

Three day conference held in Septmber 2007  "Research into Practice and Evidence into Policy". A CD has been made of the power point presentations. Please contact us if you would like to buy one for $10 + p&p. See conference report.

"Lots of people do it and it won't kill you - Adolescents' description of health risk and drug taking" presented by Dr Mark Wallace-Bell, Senior Lecturer in Addiction at the National Addiction Centre, Dept of Psychological Medicine, Christchurch School of Medicine & Health Science. .

"Little Voices Big Thoughts" presented by Nicky Harrell, who is a Health Promoter at Community and Public Health.

"Peer Sexual Health Education Programmes - a comparison of two Christchurch-based models" Presented by Jane Harrison, Education Team Leader, FPA Education Services and Sarah Wylie, Independent Evaluator.

"Boys Education, Pedagogy, the FLAMES Programme, and some other stuff" Presented by Mike Field, Service Manager for Group Special Education

"Our Youth Our Schools" How can external agencies best help within the Secondary School System? Presented by Jackie Walker, who has worked within the secondary school system for the last four years with young people helping to establish good support networks and coping mechanisms via peer and experiential learning.

"Building Resilient Students and Schools" Presented by Dr. D. Annie Henry and Dr. Mike Milstein, Partners of The Resiliency Group.
